In that same hour {Jesus} rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.” Luke 10:21-24
In these verses, Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit and thanks the Father for the way He reveals His truth. What is striking is who receives this revelation: not the wise and understanding of the world, but “little children”—those who come with humility and trust. This truth is not accessible through human wisdom or achievement but is a gift from God, graciously given according to His will.
Jesus emphasizes the unique relationship between Himself and the Father, a relationship that is not known by human reasoning but is revealed by the Son. This underscores the nature of our faith—it is not something we discover on our own, but something that is revealed to us by God through Christ. Our salvation and understanding of God’s kingdom come from God’s initiative, not our own.
Finally, Jesus turns to His disciples and calls them blessed, for they are witnesses to the fulfillment of God’s promises. What the prophets and kings longed to see, the disciples now see in Jesus—the Messiah, the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation. We too, through the Word and the Spirit, are blessed to see and hear what God has done in Christ. This is not a reason for pride but for humble gratitude, as it is all by God’s grace.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for revealing Your truth to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that it is not by our wisdom or strength that we come to know You, but by Your gracious will. Help us to remain humble, like children, trusting in Your Word and rejoicing in the salvation You have given us. May we always be grateful for the blessings You have revealed to us through Your Son. In His name, we pray. Amen.
