Pastor Patrick’s Perspective: October 2023

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” Psalm 62:8 (ESV)

Life is filled with moments of joy and moments of uncertainty. It’s in these uncertain times that we are challenged to trust in God at all times. It’s easy to trust when everything is going well, but genuine trust is forged in the fires of adversity. It’s trusting that even when the world around us seems unstable, God’s love and faithfulness remain unwavering.

The heart of this verse lies in its proclamation: “God is our refuge.” A refuge is a place of safety, a sanctuary from life’s storms. Imagine a strong fortress, impervious to the trials of the world. God is that fortress for us. When we face adversity, He is our shelter. When we are weary, He is our rest. When we feel overwhelmed, He is our strength.

He is a refuge because we need assurance as we await our final salvation. While we wait for salvation, God is not absent. He is our refuge in the midst of the waiting. His presence becomes our sanctuary, a place of solace amid life’s happenstances. This waiting period can be a challenging and unpredictable time. We may face trials, doubts, and questions as we eagerly anticipate the fulfillment of God’s promises. But in this waiting, we are called to trust. Trust that God’s timing is perfect, and His salvation will come.

At Peace Lutheran, we are not alone in our journey. We share the common bond of trusting in God. We take refuge together around God’s Word. As fellow travelers on this path of faith, we are here to support one another. We are called to be a refuge for each other, offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and a comforting presence.

Psalm 62 encourages us to patiently cling to God. Pour out your hearts before God. This isn’t just a casual exchange of words; it’s a profound act of vulnerability and intimacy. It is only possible because God has declared himself as your God. In our busy lives, we often hold back our deepest thoughts and feelings, but God invites his people to open themselves completely to Him. He longs to hear our joys, our fears, and our hopes. Our Creator wants to connect with us heart to heart.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for being our refuge and our strength. Help us to trust in you at all times, to pour out our hearts before you, and to find solace in your presence. May Peace Lutheran Church be a place of love and support for all who seek refuge in you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
