Pastor Patrick’s Perspective: March 2025

I joyfully remember the annual NALC pastor retreat I attended in January. This gathering provided not only a chance for learning but also a reunion with fellow pastors and a time for spiritual renewal that will enhance my ministry among you.

Before the retreat, the NALC gathered pastors in the early years of pastoral ministry for sessionn on Trust. Experienced pastors shared their journeys providing perspective for group. Their stories and practical advice on building trust within our congregations resonated us. We engaged in discussions about navigating conflict and fostering relationships, essential for a healthy church community. Hopefully, their insights will guide me as I work diligently to cultivate trust and openness within our congregation.

The latter part of the retreat centered around Generous Confessionalism, inviting us to explore our Lutheran Confessions as a pathway to the richness of our faith. Dr. Luy of the NALS provided a roadmap for understanding how our confessions connect to the broader Christian tradition. Rev. Dr. McFarland’s provided insights on critically engaging with both the confessions and Scripture being faithful to our Lutheran theological heritage. Pastor Bhasin’s talk on “Missional Engagement with Culture” sparked new ideas for how we can actively engage with the world around us, and I took many notes to share these concepts with you.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the retreat involved reconnecting with old friends and meeting new colleagues. The fellowship we shared reminded us of the trust we have built over time, allowing us to pray, confess, and support one another in our personal and ministerial lives. This sense of community is invaluable, and I look forward to bringing that spirit of connection back to our congregation.

As the retreat concluded, all the pastors present reaffirmed our ordination vows. Standing alongside my fellow pastors, I felt a strong sense of unity and purpose, knowing that we are all called to shepherd our congregations with faithfulness and love. Throughout the retreat, we nourished our spirits with daily prayer and two Eucharistic celebrations, grounding our discussions in the sacredness of our calling. Participating in Morning Prayer, Noonday Prayer, and Compline reminded us of God’s presence.

As I return to you, I bring joy and eagerness to better serve you and to foster engagement within our congregation and community. Together, let us continue to grow in faith, drawing on the rich resources of our Lutheran heritage as we navigate the challenges and opportunities before us. Thank you for your support and prayers. I look forward to the journey ahead and the ways we will grow together in Christ.
