Advent begins on December 1. This season in the Christian liturgical calendar marks the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. Advent is a time of reflection, prayer, and anticipation. It emphasizes themes of hope, peace, joy, and love symbolized by the lighting of Advent candles on an Advent wreath. Each candle represents a different theme and is lit progressively throughout the season.
Advent also serves as a reminder of the second coming of Christ, encouraging believers to prepare their hearts and minds for both the celebration of Christ’s birth and His eventual return. Many Lutheran congregations incorporate special worship services, hymns, and readings during this time to enhance the spiritual significance of the season.
