“And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.” (1 Sam. 3:1b ESV)
This verse reveals a time of spiritual drought, when the people longed for the guidance and revelation from their Creator. The absence of divine communication left a void in their lives and created a deep hunger for the presence of God in the days of Samuel.
There are times when we may find ourselves in a similar spiritual drought, longing for a word from God. Living in a world bombarded with noise, distractions, and conflicting voices, it’s not uncommon to feel a sense of spiritual emptiness or a lack of divine guidance. Yet, the Lord is not silent in our days.
As Lutherans, we firmly believe that it is through God’s Word that the Holy Spirit speaks to us, transforming our hearts, and drawing us closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ. In the Bible, God reveals His character, His promises, and His plan of salvation for all humanity. It is by His Word that God comforts, guides, and assures us of His love and forgiveness.
Take comfort in knowing that God’s Word endures forever. As the psalmist declares, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8). No matter the circumstances or the silence we may encounter, God’s Word remains a steadfast anchor for our souls.
Additionally, God has provided for us by the faithful preaching and teaching of His Word in which the Gospel proclaimed. In the faithful preaching and teaching of God’s Word, we hear the voice of God speaking directly to us. Where the Word is proclaimed, the Holy Spirit can works to convict, encourage, and inspire us in our faith journey.
Never underestimate the power of God’s Word to transform lives. Just as God spoke to Samuel, He continues to speak to us today. We may not hear an audible voice or witness extraordinary visions, but as we engage with His Word, God speaks to our hearts, guiding us in righteousness and drawing us into deeper communion with Him.
