Pastor Patrick’s Perspective: January 25, 2026
Happy new year everyone. When writing for the January newsletter, I was busy thinking about Christmas and Epiphany. Now that they are over, my mind has turn to the new year itself. Happy 2026.
What are your plans and goals this new year? Any new years resolutions? Forbes magazine reports that most resolutions are about physical fitness, finances, mental health, weight loss, and improved diet. According to the Pews Research Center, 43% of American give up on their new years resolutions in February. Have you already given up? Luckily God judges us by Jesus Christ’s works and not our own. Me, I’m only now beginning to think about what I want to do differently this year.
Last week, I sat down and listed habits that I want to develop. I’m still working on the list, it might take me all year to develop. I’m much like the Americans in the Forbes article; my list begins with physical health. But then it goes on to include spiritual health, emotional health, relational health, about possession, professional, and self care. Yeah, my list is less a new year’s resolution and more life goals.
Self-care is about boundaries and sabbath, fun and down time. My professional goals are all about how to be a better pastor and keep up my skills: biblical languages, continuing reading theology, pastoral care resources, and the latest thoughts on evangelism. My spiritual goals are much like that of all Christians: how do I spend time with the Bible, in prayer, worshiping, serving Christ, and giving to the kingdom.
Well, my master habit list is a work in progress, just like me. I might share parts of it if I ever finish it. Thankfully my relation with Christ is based on his love for me and not the quality of my list.
What new goals and habits do you have for your relation with the church? I pray that you have a great new 2026, and may you develop a few of the habits that you desire this year.
Remember, God makes all things beautiful in its time. So, do not be afraid, for there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
